After a trip to Amsterdam a month ago i've been fixated on the idea of moving over there. Is there anyway I can just packup and go with my girlfriend? Everywhere I look for apartments they are looking at 2000 euro per month, even in Jordaan and Haarlem the rent is not that much cheaper. Any advice on housing would be appreciated. Secondly finding work is another problem... personally I have a background in IT and have found many specialist IT positions yet most require specialist experience or qualifications. I have college (UK BTEC) qualifications at the highest possible level before University and have a varied knowledge of all things IT and currently run an online store and offer local support. However any jobs I have heard back from won't consider an application till I have a Dutch Social Security number. Not that I want to be stuck in IT, i'd happily work in a bar/restaurant/coffeeshop or anywhere else in the city. Data entry would even get me by as the City is so wonderful. Is it easy to get a job? If I were to just packup, go and register with local police authorities in Amsterdam to say I now live there would I be able to claim Benefits to help me get by? And as for accomodation how would this work? Believe me I don't want to stay on benefits and i'm a hardworking individual. I just need to get out of England :). Kind regards and hopefully someone can help!

I'd think very carefully about moving to the Netherlands at the moment: the credit crisis has frightened everywhere, and many companies are just not hiring at the moment, particularly people who don't speak Dutch. Now isn't the time for anyone, anywhere, to be walking away from a certain job into the unknown. That said, IT skills are as in demand here as anywhere else try http://www.xpatjobs.com/ for an overview.

I moved to Amsterdam with my boyfriend 4months ago! First of all; finding a job is not easy; I searched for more than 6 months( I also have an IT background)I am Turkish so I found a Turkish company to get my dutch residence card; no dutch company wants to take you without your permission; unless you are very lucky.. And if you get the residence permit; you can take your gf with you and you dont have to be married for her to get the residence too; just live in the same house thats it.. But the rentals are very expensive.. I live in one of the best places in Amsterdam(called Overtoom);its very close to the center and a beautiful street near Vonedlpark; and I give 1500euros per month (including all expenses like gas;water..) but you can find cheaper houses if you want to move a little further from the center.. But be prepared the houses are really small here.. Amsterdam is a nice place to live (except the weather):) I hope you find a job:)
