Personally I can not recomment the netherlands. I have worked harder than anyone here - I am pennyless - out of work - and everybody is violating my civil rights without the police or government is doing anything about it. I would advise you not to contact me or ask to camp with me - they want to evict me now before august 23 - I have done nothing - but the neigbours on 4 and 8-10 are completely insane. Can you beleive it - at nr. 8 was first a big sign that so and so and so and so were married. They do not even live there - then there was a big sign a baby was born - it was there for exactly one day (a guess they rented the baby somewhere). Still I will refuse to leave the house - I have already done so much work on it - and I got it legally. I have the idea though the house carries a dark deep secret - maybe it was used for executions by a criminal organisation (or a secret service) and all those criminals around me are afraid all there dark deep secrets will come out when I live there. If you want to come to the nehterlands - do not come to the south.

in order to get perminant residance in The Netherlands you have to speak Dutch. Its the law. There is a test that you have to take and it is in Dutch and only Dutch. Naturally if youre from an EU country you dont have to take any test, but if you are not you have to prove that you have made an effort to blend into Dutch society - and that means speaking Dutch.

In contrast to many people here, I would not say it is impossible. Yes, the regulations became more strict for foreign people to live there (including a test at some point) but that doesn't apply to EU citizens. Many Dutch people speak English, so it is easy to survive without speaking the language. But without speaking the language, it is more difficult to find a job indeed, although for things like aupair or within universities there are definitely options. And, of course, it makes life so much easier when you speak the language of a country! I'm not sure where you are located in the UK, but if you happen to live in London - go and visit the pub "De Hems" where a lot of Dutch people go to (11 Macclesfield Street, LONDON, W1V 7LF). I am sure they can give you valuable advice also with regard to accommodation and getting work. Or check some websites like: http://www.jobcentreplus.gov.uk/JCP/Customers/Workingortrainingineurope/Dev_009854.xml.html or the Dutch embassy in London (includes lots of links to other pages) http://www.mfa.nl/beheer/aspx/get.aspx?xdl=../views/post/xdl/Page&VarIdt=132&SitIdt=169&ItmIdt=33502&reload=true You may also be interested in learning Dutch online: http://www.hull.ac.uk/lagelands/ (University of Hull) or for lessons in person: http://www.kwintessential.co.uk/language/learn-dutch.html and I am sure there are more institutions like this.
