Im Australian and applied for a schegnen visa in July 09 which then turned into a working residence permit for holland and expires in July 2010. Now Im thinking of working in London, if I apply for my UK visa to start in May 2010, when will I be able to go back to Holland or any other EU country?

Your UK visa has nothing to do with your Dutch visa. You may apply for a UK visa at any time. This will not influence your Dutch visa directly, however the fact that you move to the UK will eventually lead to your Dutch long term residency visa being canceled. Australians may enter and remain in the entire Schengen area for up to 90 days, which is sufficient if you live in the UK and are just visiting.
